The Luseys are in Tomsk, Russia finalizing their adoption of Artyom. This sweet boy has some medical issues that need immediate care in the U.S., so please be praying that the judge in the case waives the 30-day waiting period that normally applies to adoptions in Russia and they can bring Artyom home as soon as possible. For more information on their situation, visit their blog: lusey.com.

The Winters will welcome their daughter, Ruthie, home from Ethiopia tomorrow! Rebecca has been in Ethiopia since last week and officially took custody of Ruthie on Monday. Please pray for a smooth transition and sweet family time for the Winters as they get used to being a family of four.

God is SO good and has shown Himself in amazing ways for both of these families over the past several months!
I don't think this is just because our family was created through adoption, I think all mom's are always looking for resources to help them be a "better" mom. We want to do all that we can to help our children succeed in life. We want to help them grow in their knowledge of Christ. We want to teach them all that we can before they leave home.

I don't think I am alone in this. This is why I am very excited about an upcoming study we are having at Henderson Hills Baptist Church. The book we will be studying is "The Connected Child", by Karyn Purvis. This study is geared to bring hope and healing to your adoptive or foster family. It is designed to help parents correct and connect with their children.
It will help equip parents with practical methods to build stronger bonds and more nurturing relationships with their children. It brings hope to families while empowering them to thrive. Amber Given, Licensed Counselor and Director of Peppers Ranch will lead us through "The Connected Child" Book and Workbook. The workbook was co-authored by Karyn Purvis and Michael and Amy Monroe. The Monroe's lead an adoption and foster care ministry called "Tapestry" at Irving Bible Chapel in Irving Texas. They are also adoptive parents.

The class will be on Saturday nights at Henderson Hills from 6:45 - 8:00pm. It will begin on February 5th for 5 weeks. You can contact me for more information at shettrons@aol.com. Childcare will be provided.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6823480857863027639.post-88456097028573674772010-11-19T07:43:00.000-08:002010-11-19T07:50:08.463-08:00Becoming a Band-Aid DadThis morning I read this article written from an adoptive dad's perspective. I LOVED IT! I can't tell you how many times I am guilty of "brushing off" a wound my children feel are so BIG (if you know what I mean)! What a simple concept, just taking the time to let them know that whatever is wrong with them is important to you. And how this can ultimately, in some small way, help heal a past hurt.

Becoming a Band-Aid DadUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6823480857863027639.post-12733035967663511502010-11-18T06:52:00.000-08:002010-11-18T07:18:35.815-08:00Waiting Mom Shares Her HeartSeveral months ago my husband and I met with a couple who were considering adoption. We were thrilled to do this! We consider it one of our greatest joys to be able to share our personal experience and help someone else who is starting down this journey.

We visited with them about where they were at in the process, and different options that were out there. It was just a sweet time of getting to talk adoption. I left that meeting thinking...Wow, thanks God for allowing us to do this. Well, fast forward several months later and I have to tell you this couple has amazed me!! I think sometimes when we think God is using us to help someone else, He really might be doing the opposite! I have learned a ton from this "waiting mom" about being willing to open yourself up to His plan.

She has now started a blog about their adoption journey. She opens up her heart to the whole process and it is so incredible to see how far they have come. I can not wait to see what God has in store for this family! You can follow their journey at www.themadoles.blogspot.com.

If you or someone you know is considering adoption, or foster care Engaging the Fatherless has many people on our team who have walked this journey before you and would love to help in any way. You can email me at shettrons@aol.com and I will help put you in contact with the right person.

"For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. You can email jlee@hhbc.com to find out more information. An OKDHS Resource Family Recruiter or your foster agency representative is the person who registers you for the classes.

The training schedule is Tuesday/Thursday from 6-9pm beginning April 6th and ending May 4th. We will be attending and would love it if you were able to join us.

Do you have questions? Engaging the Fatherless will be hosting an interactive 6-week study called If You Were Mine for those interested in exploring whether adoption is right for their family.

This study will provide informed insight on many topics, including God's heart for orphans, basic decisions, agencies, funding, paperwork, home studies and finalization. All of this is aimed at helping you or someone you know, understand the next steps to take and discern whether God is calling you to give a child a forever family through adoption.

Beginning January 17th, the study will run for six weeks. Childcare is available. A workbook is required for this study which can be purchased for $10. We don't want finances to be a barrier that keeps anyone from attending so please contact us if you need assistance. You can register online at http://www.hhbc.com/engaging-the-fatherless.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6823480857863027639.post-55195585734365451902010-01-05T19:40:00.000-08:002010-01-05T19:50:39.252-08:00Jumping in to 2010There are so many ways you can get involved in what is going on within the ministry right now! God has been so faithful to open the hearts of so many who have a passion for Engaging the Fatherless!

Mark your calendars for January 17th. Two big happenings that night. First we are kicking off the Adoption classes at Henderson Hills for anyone who has had the nudge to possibly explore the option of adoption, but didn’t know where to start. This class will help answer so many of your questions! The class will be a six week course and you won’t want to miss it. You can enroll online at hhbc.engagingthefatherless.com. Or you can email Susie at ssexton@hhbc.com for more information. The class will have childcare provided, but you must preregister. The cost of the materials will be $10.

Also, on the 17th our Foster Care branch will be holding an informational meeting for those who are interested in exploring becoming foster parents. Several organizations will be present to answer questions, share information and help direct those interested in becoming foster parents. This meeting will be in Room W105 at Henderson Hills. If you or someone you know might be interested in learning more about foster care or ways you can help serve children in the foster care system, you won’t want to miss this. You can contact Julie at jlee@hhbc.com or Beth at millardkbme@yahoo.com for more information.

Another event to mark on your calendar is going to be put on by our widows branch of the ministry. We are having a tea party! Yes, we will be serving tea to all of our widow ladies at Henderson Hills. Watch for more details to come and please plan to join us, it will be like nothing ever done at Henderson Hills. We are looking forward to it. If this is something you would like to help serve at or be a part of, please contact Sharon at scoon.hhbc.com.

If you are interested in being a part of any of these events, or if you would like to learn more about the Engaging The Fatherless ministry at Henderson Hills. We would love to hear from you!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6823480857863027639.post-87091289128730272892009-11-12T09:54:00.000-08:002009-11-12T10:09:44.230-08:00Official LaunchThanks so much to everyone who stopped by our table last weekend in the Gathering! We had a great showing from those who are interested in learning more about this ministry! The best thing I can tell you right now is to mark it on your calendars...November 22nd at 4:00pm. We will meet in the High School room at Henderson Hills for a Vision Casting Meeting. You will hear the hearts of the leaders and how God brought about this unique ministry in our Church. There will also be time for you to sign-up for different events we are planning, and to learn more about the classes we are offering in January. Where did we get this name? What kind of ministry is this? Okay, let me explain.

Recently, I was at an event where a teenage boy caught my attention. I can't quite put my finger on what it was about him, but there he was. I knew when I met him something was up. I have to admit to you, I didn't think it was something good. The whole evening I kept my eye on this kid. What was it? Well, the moment came when God was ready to reveal to me why this boy needed my attention. You know what I did? I ran! Yep. My first thought was, "No not me! Don't use me to do this!" But as God so gently does, he made sure I had no choice. I sat down with this child, and quickly learned what our Father in Heaven needed me to do. You see, I found out this boy was in foster care and had been for years. He shared with me how he really wanted to be adopted, but didn't feel like he ever would be. He was so sure nobody would ever want someone his age; they only wanted the younger kids. This boy was so sure of himself on this, his words went straight through my heart. I was able to share with him how our Heavenly Father loves him. HE has a plan for him and cares about him. Did this boy hear what I was saying? I don't know. But I can tell you, God wanted me to tell him that this particular evening. When I left this event and knew I would probably never see this child again, my heart ached. I was given an opportunity to engage in conversation with this boy, and thankfully our Heavenly Father made sure I didn't walk away from him.

This ministry is designed to help Christians obey God's command. The Bible says in Isaiah 1:17, "Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, and plead the widow's cause." So often many of us are just like I was that night, scared. I didn't know how to help this situation. I didn't know what to say to him, but God did. "Engaging the Fatherless" is designed to reach out to children in foster care, children who need adopted, single moms, birth moms and widows. We want to help families who have felt the calling to become foster parents, but don't know what the next step is. We want to come along side of couples who have felt God's nudging to adopt, but don't know anything about the process. We want to learn how to care for the orphans who live all over the world and in some small way share with them the simple truth, "God loves them". We want to be an encourager for the single mom who is bearing a difficult burden of raising her children on her own. We want to help birth moms who are dealing with the loss of a child. And we want to be a support to the widows in our Church.

Please join us in praying for this ministry. If you think this might be something you want to be involved in we would love to hear from you.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
