Becoming a Band-Aid Dad

This morning I read this article written from an adoptive dad's perspective. I LOVED IT! I can't tell you how many times I am guilty of "brushing off" a wound my children feel are so BIG (if you know what I mean)! What a simple concept, just taking the time to let them know that whatever is wrong with them is important to you. And how this can ultimately, in some small way, help heal a past hurt.

Waiting Mom Shares Her Heart

Several months ago my husband and I met with a couple who were considering adoption. We were thrilled to do this! We consider it one of our greatest joys to be able to share our personal experience and help someone else who is starting down this journey.

We visited with them about where they were at in the process, and different options that were out there. It was just a sweet time of getting to talk adoption. I left that meeting thinking...Wow, thanks God for allowing us to do this. Well, fast forward several months later and I have to tell you this couple has amazed me!! I think sometimes when we think God is using us to help someone else, He really might be doing the opposite! I have learned a ton from this "waiting mom" about being willing to open yourself up to His plan.

She has now started a blog about their adoption journey. She opens up her heart to the whole process and it is so incredible to see how far they have come. I can not wait to see what God has in store for this family! You can follow their journey at

If you or someone you know is considering adoption, or foster care Engaging the Fatherless has many people on our team who have walked this journey before you and would love to help in any way. You can email me at and I will help put you in contact with the right person.

"For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will." Ephesians 4:1-5

Updates, Updates, Updates!

Wow! First let me say I am sorry for the extended absence between posts. But, a lot is happening within this ministry! Praise God!

Our Waiting Mom's Group has moved! We are now meeting at All About Cha on 33rd and Broadway in Edmond. So, if you are looking for a great group of women who know what it's like to wonder if every phone call you receive...might...just might be "the one" then come join us! Those of you who are waiting, you know what I'm talking about. All the women in this group are either currently waiting to be matched, or have been through the process. We meet on Monday nights at 7:30 so come join us! You can email me at if you would like more information.

Ever considered visiting a foster child/infant in the hospital? Well, maybe you haven't, but now you can! Engaging the Fatherless is sponsoring a training offered by DHS to allow you to rock babies, read books to infants, or simply spend time with foster children who need an adult to be with them. The training will be on Thursday, December 2nd from 6-8 pm. We will meet at Henderson Hills Baptist Church in the Preschool Room P114-P115. You can email to find out more information. This is a great way to invest time and share some love with a child in the Oklahoma foster care.

Speaking of foster care...are you currently a family who is either in the process of fostering a child, or have a child/children in your home? We have a Foster Care support group meeting that will help encourage you along this journey. If you would like more information on this support group you can email

This just highlights a few things we are up to. Many, many more to come! Keep checking back here and at the website under the Engaging the Fatherless Ministry tab.

Foster Care Training

We're excited to report HHBC will be hosting Foster Care Training classes. This is the scheduled 27 hour PRIDE training required to become foster parents and is one of the many steps in the process. (The first step is to begin the application process by filing paperwork with OKDHS or a Foster Agency .) An OKDHS Resource Family Recruiter or your foster agency representative is the person who registers you for the classes.

The training schedule is Tuesday/Thursday from 6-9pm beginning April 6th and ending May 4th. We will be attending and would love it if you were able to join us.

Do you have questions? If you're wondering how to get started or have concerns about anything, please call or email Beth or Kory at 373-2999 or email at We would love to talk with you. This training is open to the public. Please pass along the information to anyone as the Lord leads.

If You Were Mine

A Workshop for Those Exploring Adoption

Have you ever thought about adopting? Engaging the Fatherless will be hosting an interactive 6-week study called If You Were Mine for those interested in exploring whether adoption is right for their family.

This study will provide informed insight on many topics, including God's heart for orphans, basic decisions, agencies, funding, paperwork, home studies and finalization. All of this is aimed at helping you or someone you know, understand the next steps to take and discern whether God is calling you to give a child a forever family through adoption.

Beginning January 17th, the study will run for six weeks. Childcare is available. A workbook is required for this study which can be purchased for $10. We don't want finances to be a barrier that keeps anyone from attending so please contact us if you need assistance. You can register online at

Jumping in to 2010

There are so many ways you can get involved in what is going on within the ministry right now! God has been so faithful to open the hearts of so many who have a passion for Engaging the Fatherless!

Mark your calendars for January 17th. Two big happenings that night. First we are kicking off the Adoption classes at Henderson Hills for anyone who has had the nudge to possibly explore the option of adoption, but didn’t know where to start. This class will help answer so many of your questions! The class will be a six week course and you won’t want to miss it. You can enroll online at Or you can email Susie at for more information. The class will have childcare provided, but you must preregister. The cost of the materials will be $10.

Also, on the 17th our Foster Care branch will be holding an informational meeting for those who are interested in exploring becoming foster parents. Several organizations will be present to answer questions, share information and help direct those interested in becoming foster parents. This meeting will be in Room W105 at Henderson Hills. If you or someone you know might be interested in learning more about foster care or ways you can help serve children in the foster care system, you won’t want to miss this. You can contact Julie at or Beth at for more information.

Another event to mark on your calendar is going to be put on by our widows branch of the ministry. We are having a tea party! Yes, we will be serving tea to all of our widow ladies at Henderson Hills. Watch for more details to come and please plan to join us, it will be like nothing ever done at Henderson Hills. We are looking forward to it. If this is something you would like to help serve at or be a part of, please contact Sharon at

If you are interested in being a part of any of these events, or if you would like to learn more about the Engaging The Fatherless ministry at Henderson Hills. We would love to hear from you!
